Hopefully, by now you are well on your way to becoming more and more whole, more and more your true self. I also hope you have found a friend or two to share the journey with you. Someone to listen to your story as well as invite you to listen to theirs.

Bands of brothers and sisters are not forged through some weekly meeting or a sign-up sheet in the church foyer. Bands of brothers and sisters are made through a long, hard journey of war, battle after battle together, learning how to fight, carrying the wounded to safety, watching each other’s backs. It has to happen “out there,” because most of life happens outside the weekly hour-and-a-half ministry or the morning Bible study. It happens while taking long car rides, fishing, working on a fence, building something together, hiking, camping, and golfing. It happens on retreats, over coffee, over wine, during hospital visits, and through prayer. Lots of prayer.

If you don’t have someone you can pray with and who will pray with you, you are alone. Yep, alone. Someone needs to be a witness to your life with God, and you need to be a witness to someone else’s. In both your triumphs and your setbacks, you need a brother or sister to celebrate with you or offer a shoulder. (Chapter 14)
