I wanted to share an excerpt with you from the manuscript of our new book King Me as we move through another day of COVID-19. What an amazing time to be alive, when the enemy has released so many foul spirits on assignment into the world, and they are being fueled by their very names: fear, despair, depression, and death. These are powerful moments when the sons and daughters of God are also being deployed for the very mission for which they have been training all their days up until this day. Secure your heart, secure your home front, and then offer encouragement to whomever God brings across your path. When I say encouragement, I mean mostly listen … listening might just be the most loving and compassionate thing you can do. A handful of caring questions wouldn’t hurt, either ... and

What an incredible time. The word “incredible” means impossible to believe; extraordinary. That’s about right. Oh, there are many other words we all are using to describe these uncertain times ... confusion, uncertainty, and concern. Though I believe these words are "in bounds” for my heart, they are moving me on the battle field with a momentum and current that is dangerous to my soul. Right now, I feel like I want to be responsible so I don't have to be responsible. I want to be careful to avoid the place where, if I try to stand still, a tornado of voices is swirling around me, and if I'm moving, it moves right along with me. While I am uncertain whether or not the kingdom of darkness is responsible for the coronavirus, I am certain it is opportunistic. Darkness takes every circumstance

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. - 1 Corinthians 13:13 These words remind me of the characters in The Wizard of Oz, three companions with whom Dorothy must journey in a strange land and uncertain time in order to become more. The Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion ... wisdom, heart, and courage. It feels a bit like we've been tornado-ed into Oz these days, or stepped through the wardrobe into Narnia, or taken the Red Pill to see how far the rabbit hole goes. But on the other hand, we have been living outside the Garden all along. As comfortable as I may want to make it, and as much as I can be fooled into thinking I have control, things really are not what they seem. We live in a battle. Evil is real. In days like we're experiencing now

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. - Ephesians 6:13-15 Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened. - Billy Graham I have played a lot of games in my life. Literally a lot of games: basketball, baseball, football, and more ... mostly when I was young and dads were the coaches. The older I got, the stakes got higher and so did the intensity of practice and the games. Dads were replaced with “Coaches”, scores mattered, and

This past week has been another painful reminder of how many hearts are hurting out there. Believers and those who are yet to be are absolutely going through tough times. And we know the trials and hardships are expected, even promised... it was true for the followers of Jesus in the first century and it echoes true for today. The details have changed as life has had its advancements but it is still war and falleness and in need of hope and strength. "Come back Jesus come back and end this war ushering us back to the Garden"… until He does… we wage war... "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." - Ephesians 6:12 "For though we

Freedom is a magnificent word. I didn’t feel free twenty years ago. I was overwhelmed, with three young daughters, working in campus ministry. My three girls are all now in their twenties. How did this happen? Aren’t I still in my twenties?! My hot flashes assure me I am not physically, yet my truest self knows I am still the same soulful woman who loves to be silly and laugh hard and dance like I’m in high school (my girls turn away when this happens - completely mortified). I was recently looking at a picture from the early 2000's. Our family made the 30 minutes drive to Ganyard Farm each fall to ride the hay wagon out to the field to pick pumpkins. I loved seeing the Ring Pop’s, baggy jeans, and all the hair clips. I mostly loved seeing my girls in my arms…hugging them close. Sometimes

No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God. - Romans 2:29 The man who can articulate the movements of his inner life need no longer be a victim of himself, but is able slowly and consistently to remove the obstacles that prevent the spirit from entering. - Henri Nouwen There is an old southern saying ... what is in the well comes out in the bucket. The “inner world” is a world with a dictator. Either the false self/flesh runs the inner world or the true man or true woman runs the inner world. The true is on the side of God and is in alignment with God and, when operational, runs a full and abundant Kingdom Life. The false self/flesh plays the

In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self-ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ - Colossians 2:1 Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it. Helen Keller Jesus, overhearing, shot back, “Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? I’m here inviting the sin-sick, not the spiritually-fit.” - Mark 2:17 (MSG) Having something cut out or cut away is reserved for the professionals, someone who knows what the heck they are doing. Things get pretty serious pretty quick when a diagnosis of cancer is presented to a patient. I’ve had family and friends who have been presented such diagnosis and the treatment decided upon ... cut it out. Tumors or cancer compromise and encumber

People “sin” everyday. Sin is never “God’s Will” and yet, it happens everyday in this fallen place, under the watchful love and care of God and through the work of our enemy and their partnership with the flesh/false self. Like with your children, they do not always do what you ask or need them to do, we can not control all they should say and do. We can not control all they shouldn’t say and not do as well. And so, mistakes are made. God is in control, and yet doesn’t seem to exercise the power and authority to make us do what is right nor "make us" do what isn’t wrong. He prefers a more dangerous path: that we walk with Him, trust Him, and allow His way to become our way. In the process of learning, a lot of mistakes are made. The first step in admitting a mistake, confessing a wrong, is

Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.- Matthew 20:28 A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act. - Gandhi Ransom. The word has both a dark and wonderful meaning ... dark because something is being held captive ... wonderful, because someone precious and dear is about to be set free. Can you imagine finding your child missing, being informed that your spouse or your parent is gone and receiving a ransom note? After the initial shock, pain and anger, a plan of deliverance would be set in motion, whatever it takes to see your loved one home. So Maximus ransoms Rome with his life. Wallace ransoms
