Being Fathered

God has often fathered me as I father my kids. It’s an easy place for him to get our attention as men, we think about, pray about, are concerned about our kids… they are “constantly on our hearts and minds.” It’s part of the Dad job.

SuperBowl LI is now history and whether you are waking up to the news or you watched it unfold, people will be talking about it for decades. It had all the essential ingredients: defying the odds, down but not out, a band of hearts coming together on mission, and truly much much more as you collect each and every story that combined for an even Larger Story. Sounds more like a chapter from The Lord of the Rings or Narnia than a football game, and that is my point. We were made for a Large Story, to play a part that matters.

Deep Words

Deeply Humble
Fiercely Gentle
Strongly Patient

Dear BraveHearts,

Welcome to 2017! Happy New Year!!!

These first days of January are a good time for both reflections and forecasts.

Knowing What You Don't Want

My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day. Why don’t you choose to be led by the Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence?

Standing Our Guard

Though times it seems
Like I'm coming undone
This walk can often feel lonely
No matter what until this race is won
I will stand my ground where hope can be found
I will stand my ground where hope can be found

Lauren Daigle, O’Lord

Some songs come into your life and they play over and over as a gift from God, an anthem that brings courage, motivation, and perspective. Each line feels deeply true, and I get the profound sense, once again, I am not alone… He sees me and is with me.

Gearing Down

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Jesus, Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)

Dear BraveHearts

I have a young friend who turns 14 today. I texted him the following…
