In 1994, Michael counseled me through a personal transgression that caused great crisis for my family. He did so with a grace, compassion and eye toward redemption and healing that was uncommon in my life. He shared the love of God the Father, and his compassion would change the trajectory of my life and spiritual walk forever.
Over the past 16 years, Michael has been a friend, confidant, counselor, team mate, competitor as we have navigated through different seasons in life including death of parents, divorce, child birth and death, new jobs, new callings, new ministries, successes and not so successful endeavors, all the while encouraging us that the answer in all situations is the same: "walk with God" and he and Robin have been great examples of that for all who experience them.
In 2007 I attended the annual Top Gun conference for the 3rd year in a row. During the event, i was moved by the Spirit to approach Michael with a message that had come to me as clear as day during one of our "time alone with God" sessions. The message was this; "tell Michael he must get this message out! Help him!"
When I approached Michael about my instructions, there was little resistance, he had already started writing, he knew it was time. God was taking us both on a special journey.
We began to address the financial, spiritual and logistical obstacles and challenges ahead. Michael set out to make the SEARCH AND RESCUE message available to Christian men and woman where ever they may be. My prayer is that the message to "live from the heart" will impact your spiritual walk as much as it has mine. My hope is you will share your impact and experience with God with the hearts of others as He comes after you in the pages of this Larger Gospel.
I immersed myself in a journey that I know God wanted me to travel; I don't know about you, but most every journey I have ever made has been life-changing on many levels. This book took me to God, not a chest-poking, dictatorial God, but a god who is in love with me and wants me to find my way to Him.
Looking at the various divisions of the book... Part 1 - "LOST" - that is where we all are generally speaking. Parts 2 and 3 "Where are we?" and the "Search" - we are still lost, but trying to find our way. We are on the path but the path is not easy at all. Why? We have an enemy who is out to devour us on our journey; his name is Satan and he will stop at nothing to keep us in our own self-centered little story, often missing completely the much larger story that is unfolding around us.
Part 4 "Reoriented" - being oriented and restored is the goal of any rescue - it's the result of discovering where we are, who we are, and the good God is doing in our life.
Finally, SEARCH & RESCUE may be the best man-made compass we have to find our way to an intimacy and a connectedness with God!
Inspiring, challenging and so, so true. It's the first book I have read in a long time where every turn of the page brings new life. I highly recommend it, not just for those of you who feel lost, but especially for those who think you're "found".
Not this one.
I don't think I've ever had a book that explained things so well and clearly, that it actually caused me to have to stop and think about things in my life so often as I read along. I'm used to glossing through a chapter or two, then reflecting on a few key points afterward.
This book is different. It's really about me. And you. And it's real. Mr. Thompson doesn't seem to be adding any garnish, it's all meat and potatoes, and great food for your soul. This is an amazing book. I'm going to give one to every one of my friends.
I'd urge you to read it yourself, then do the same.
Michael does a wonderful job in re-orienting us to the larger story God is inviting us to live in. There was one small sentence in the book that I think sums it all up - "We've underestimated our value and worth". We underestimate the good God wants to do in our lives and the forces that are opposed to that. Search and Rescue can help anyone understand and respond to this to draw closer to the true person God intended you to be.
If you know the Story you've been dropped into, certain things will become clear to you. The Story gives you your bearings and restores a significant degree of situational awareness. Certain things can't be revealed on this side of the Story, but if you know where the narrative has been and is going, you need not live at the whim of randomness. Randomness will kill your heart. The opposite of randomness is Story. What we need to see is a glimpse of what the Director sees. Pan back; see what we're up against.
"Search and Rescue" gets beyond the canned religious formulas, bullet-points and "should's" [be a more faithful church attender, get more serious about spiritual growth, or fad programs] to offer a seasoned perspective you'll seldom hear in church. Michael Thompson is a trail guide who knows the terrain and how to help others use a truer map and a more accurate compass. This book will serve as a refreshing introduction to the Story we've been missing, yet find ourselves faced with at every turn. It exposes the real world we can't see, and desperately need to.

I love the anecdotal accounts that clarify the many messages in the Bible that I have either misunderstood or found confusing previously. I found that I needed to read further after completing each chapter. When one discovers what the enemy is up to in our lives one becomes better equipped and prepared to deal with the "daily" issues that confront all of us!
This is a MUST read. Bravo!!!
This book brings into focus the fact that we were made for oneness connectedness and intimacy with God. The fact that He is with us and available to us at all times is a revelation to me. It also make us aware that we are opposed and that there is someone who does not want that relationship to exist.
This premise, this thought, this way of life brings me peace and better relationships with my wife and family.
People will notice a change in you.
"Seek and you shall find" is a very common verse often used by people from all backgrounds and creeds but none more so than believers. Through this scriptural truth we are often reminded that it is for us to look for God and if we look hard enough then we will eventually find him. A little bit like the game we all played as children called hide and seek. Though this is true it is only half the the truth as we forget the other and most important side which is that God also wants and does come looking for us before we ever do.
This has unfortunately worked its way into our prayer life and pretty much into the whole of our walk with God. The motto is that those that find him the best are the ones that look for him the most. Is that simple or is isn't it? Michael Thompson through his excellent book Search and Rescue shares with us a side of God we seldom hear about or see. While we read we begin to understand that God is a passionate lover who is more desperate to find us often, than we are of finding him. Yes ok we all know we are somehow missing something even if we have never entered a church or said a prayer. However this is not what this book is really about. Here as we read we are invited to see that those of us that have claimed to know him for so many years can actually begin to realize that the desire and exhaustive efforts we made to look for him are in fact the same ones God makes as he looks for us and there was in fact no need for us to try so hard.
What is a real eye opener is that though God is interested in our time, gifts, and lives, the main thing he is after is our hearts. In chapter 8 Thompson shares beautifully a truth we all have heard about but very few of us actually know personally. In fact it is because of our ignorance in this matter that our faith and walk with God is often so dry and as hard as chewing nails. Michael very accurately describes this when he writes, "Little did I know, in the months to come, how major that moment, as well as that word heart, would prove itself to be in the recovery of my own heart and the trajectory of my spiritual life." I love Thompsons' vulnerability as he invites us all to share in his discovery of this truth. In fact the whole book is written in a way in which we are all made to feel that we are fellow travelers with him which makes the message and book that much more personable and easy to get into.
Search and Rescue is a book you will need to read slowly. It has many pearls of wisdom and nuggets of gold along the way that will be missed if read quickly. It is a book that can and should be read by everyone desiring to have the deep walk our hearts yearn for and God desires to have with us. This is a message about recovering your heart by understanding what God is after and the lengths He has gone and goes to look for it. If you have been struggling to believe that God desires even more than you to show you how much and how well he loves you, or been thinking all along that the only reason Jesus came was to save you from hell then Search and Rescue must be at the top of your 2012 "to read" list.
I wholeheartedly commend this book to you and your loved ones. Check it out!
